How to Create a Productive Workspace

The open office layout can be a pet hate for any office worker. The constant distractions, phone calls and background noise can mean many employees struggle to get their head down and concentrate on what they really need to.

If you’re a small business owner looking to expand, the chances are you will require employees to help you do so. If this is the case, and you want to ensure your office space is as productive as possible, here are some helpful tips from the Pandle team that may prove useful.

Light, bright and airy

Large windows and light paint are the order of the day when it comes to decorating an office. Anything too dark can effect employees’ moods and if you choose a busy wallpaper it can prove distracting.

Keep it neutral and add a few accessories or touches to make an office ‘homely’. You can do this by incorporating your brand colours, or even popping your logo on the mugs in the kitchen. Small efforts can make a much bigger difference than you think.

Space is a deal breaker for a lot of employees. If employees feel too cramped this can affect not only their mood, but their productiveness and creativity levels. If your budget will only stretch to a small space, avoid filling it with too many desks or ornaments. If in doubt, opt for a minimalist design.

Bring on the plant life

Not only will adding some greenery to your office create a nicer atmosphere by providing a bit of decoration, they have proven benefits on your employees’ work attitude.

A 2010 study revealed that office plants are great for reducing stress in workers, with a 37% reduction in tension and anxiety, a 58% reduction in depression and dejection and a 44% reduction in anger and hostility.

You can even help keep your employees on their toes, as plants also proved to reduce fatigue by 38%, the study reported.

As for productivity, plants will be your saviour. Our green-leafed friends can help your employees become more productive by improving cognitive function and overall focus.

Different zones

A quieter area for workers who need to get on with their work, a canteen and a more casual work area with a radio.

If you can only afford a small amount of space, use what you have and try to create an atmosphere you think employees will appreciate. If you think you’ll have only one or two employees, simply ask them how they work best and use the information they give you to give a happy work atmosphere to promise the most productive workspace.

A little goes a long way

Even the smallest of gestures can make your employees feel truly valued, which is why something as simple as a few fish or a lick of paint can freshen the place up and with it, the attitudes of your employees.

If you can afford them, ergonomic chairs and desks can be a huge help to those who’ll be sitting at a desk for 8 hours a day. Invest in your employees in return for a loyal worker who shares the same values as you and your company.
